BrainWise, Generative AI and ChatGPT

Alberta-based psychologist, Dr. Gary Brayton, has been a champion of the BrainWise program for over a decade, training educators and health providers across the province. His protégé, counselor Colton Hok, shares his enthusiasm, citing the “tremendous success” and “impactful” changes he’s seen in clients.

Colton serves nine school divisions in Alberta, reaching 40,000 students. He offers BrainWise training to wellness teams serving children, youth, and families, including those in small, rural communities. Despite the need, many of these communities lack access to behavioral health services.

For instance, the Horizon School Division, a rural area serving 3,500 students across 20 schools, has ordered BrainWise curricula and training for their staff. However, the process is slow, and many students and families in the province may never learn BrainWise.

Bridging the Rural Gap

To bridge this gap, Colton is exploring the use of generative artificial intelligence (gen AI) and Chatbots to expand the reach of BrainWise. He’s particularly interested in the ChatGPT platform, launched by gen AI in November 2022, which offers informative, human-like responses.

One of the most popular platforms on ChatGPT is Psychologist.ai, described as “someone who helps with life’s difficulties.” It received 78 million messages from November 2022 to January 2023, indicating a strong demand for such services.

While there are concerns about the accuracy of information provided by bots and potential unhealthy relationships between bots and users, research suggests the benefits outweigh the downsides. It’s clear that users need to use the 10 Wise Ways to reap benefits from AI and Chatbots. Colton is excited to explore this technology further to help more people benefit from BrainWise.
