In 1995, Dr. Barry and several instructors piloted the BrainWise for Grades 6-12 to at-risk youth in Denver middle and high schools. She served as the lead teacher, experiencing first-hand the challenges facing teachers, counselors and students. Daily classroom contact with inner-city teens and feedback from teachers and other students helped her make BrainWise a teacher-friendly and student-receptive program, centered around a scripted curriculum designed to make BrainWise easy to teach, even by peer educators and community volunteers.
In response to requests from mentors, counselors, and social workers who work individually with youth, Dr. Barry developed BrainWise One-on-One. After program graduates lamented, “I should have learned this in grade school,” Dr. Barry, again working with teachers and in the classroom, developed BrainWise for Grades K-5. A companion piece for parents and a curriculum for severely disabled students have also been developed.
The BrainWise materials were designed to be affordable and reproducible and learning- based activities were created for easy integration into literature, history, social studies, and science courses, as well as experiences and topics inside and outside the classroom.
The BrainWise curricula contain scripted lesson plans, and reproducible, age-appropriate worksheets that can be used to teach children, teens, and adults. The materials are available for group and individual teaching, and include reinforcement activities, checklists, a review guide, laminated posters and cards featuring the 10 Wise Ways.
BrainWise for Grades K-5 now accompanied by new resources. The BrainWise K-5 Curriculum includes 249 pages of scripted lesson plans and 63 reproducible student worksheets. Each chapter clearly sets forth the goal and objectives of each lesson and flexible lesson plans allow for individual creativity and emphasis. Along with the curriculum you will receive the BrainWise Companion Book How to Be BrainWise, which provides an essential guide to the BrainWise Curricula. In addition, templates for specially designed hands-on activities for younger children are included. These activities show how to infuse the BrainWise thinking skills into other subjects and activities outside the classroom.
